London Stansted Airport was initially opened in 1942 as a USAAF bomber base during World War II. It then grew into London’s 3rd major airport due to the package holiday explosion that occurred in the 1960’s.
In February 2013, Manchester Airport Group (MAG) acquired London Stansted Airport. Stansted offers one main terminal for it’s passengers. There are three passenger areas (known as satellites) in which the departure gates can be found. One of these areas is connected to the main airport terminal by an air-bridge. The remaining two are connected by the Stansted Airport Transit System for passengers.
The actual terminal building was carefully designed by Foster Associates and included input from structural engineer, Peter Rice. Stanstead Airport features a “floating” roof which is supported by a space frame – made up of inverted-pyramid roof trusses. This works to create the impression of a beautiful stylised swan in mid flight.
The base of each structure is a “utility pillar”, providing indirect uplighting illumination. It is also the location for air-conditioning, water, communications and electrics. The overall layout of the airport was purposely designed to provide an unobstructed flow for passengers all on the same level.
From 1997 to 2007 Stansted Airport saw a rapid expansion in passenger numbers. This was on the back of the boom of low cost air travel, peaking at 24 million passengers in 2007. Passenger numbers did decline for the next five years to 2012, but have since risen again. In 2014 there was a recorded annual increase of 11.7% to 19.9 million.
